HOW DO YOU INVEST YOUR TIME

The key is in not spending time, but in investing it.
Stephen R. Covey

In order to have time to do the things that are important, it’s important to schedule those things into your calendar. There is an old adage, “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” By asking yourself some simple questions, not only will you have time to do the things you want, you will be much happier. Ask: Is this the best use of my time? Treat time as a currency. Time = $. Imagine if every minute was worth a dollar. What is my goal? Is what I’m doing moving me closer to my goal or moving me further from my goal? For instance, you’ve made it a goal to start exercising, but instead of going to the gym, you decide to stay home and watch TV. Work with goals in mind. Know what you are working toward by writing out your goals and identify the top three and focus on them.
Finally, set boundaries around your time. If you must answer the phone, ask if you can call back at a time more suitable to your schedule. When you learn to lead and manage yourself to integrate all areas of your life, you will find it’s not something you specifically need to do. Imagine that all those feelings of panic, procrastination, and being in a hurry were not in your life. Feeling out of control comes when you have lost touch with what is important to you and you end up doing too much of what doesn’t matter or doing nothing.

WE ALL HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME

I found every single successful person I’ve ever spoken to, had a turning point and the turning point was where they made a clear specific unequivocal decision that they were not going to live like this anymore. That they were going to achieve success. And some people make that decision at 15 and some people make it at 50, and most people never make it at all. Brian Tracy

What do you think is a common excuse for not doing something? Many people say they don’t have enough time. Yet, the truth is you all have the same amount of time in a day: 24 hours or 1,440 minutes. In fact, you have exactly the same amount of time that was given to Helen Keller, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein. It is a matter of what you choose to do with your time. Think about this – you have 24 hours in a day …minus the 8 hours you sleep, it leaves you with 16 productive hours to accomplish things that need to be done at home and at work. However, of these 16 hours, a lot of time is wasted due to distractions, interruptions and disorganization. Have you ever thought about where your time goes? Several years ago, I caught myself making the excuse ‘I don’t have time.’ I was working in a full-time job I did not enjoy. And I thought there had to be more to life than staying in a job I didn’t like. If I was going to change careers, I needed to further my education, and the only option was to study by distance education. I was a single mom and needed an income. I thought to myself, “But I don’t have time to study!” Soon after, I read a quote by Henry Ford on the front page of our local weekly paper. It said, “If you think you can or you can’t, you are probably right.” I felt that message was for me, because I was making excuses. That quote inspired me to enroll in the University program. After many setbacks, nine years later, I attended my convocation. And the next month, I changed careers. Today, I couldn’t imagine where my life would be if I would have just resigned myself to staying in a job I didn’t like, because I made the excuse “I don’t have time.” What about you? Are you putting your goals and dreams on hold because of the excuse ‘I don’t have time?’
